Building a house

Single-family home · part 1 of 2 · 1:07

Rooms, the walk-through, kitchen and bath layouts, and the structure checks.

What the narrator says
  1. Now a house: a two-story, twenty-eight by forty-eight with a full basement and an attached garage, for the Hoffman family. Here's what Keystone adds for a home.
  2. The house model is stick-framed: walls, floors, the roof, the foundation and the garage. Draw the rooms, or paste in room measurements, and every room is labeled with its size.
  3. Then walk through it, room by room, before a single stud is cut. It is the easiest way for an owner to understand a plan.
  4. Keystone checks the plan as you draw. Here it caught two windows that would open into the garage.
  5. For the kitchen and the baths, it lays out the options that fit the room, prices each one from your price book, and checks them against the kitchen planning guidelines and the bathroom clearances in the code.
  6. Floor joists, the center beam and the footings are checked against the published span tables. When something doesn't work, like this beam, it says so in red, and the engineer makes the call.
  7. Next, the trades and the owner's choices.
